Boomers (50+) Buy Cars

keyspen101003Today’s new vehicle buyer is just under 52 years old reports Tom Libby at IHS Automotive.

The largest car buying segment is 55 to 64 years old reported Michael Sivak at the University of Michigan. “Marketing Implications of the Changing Age Composition of Vehicle Buyers in the U.S.”  Drivers between 65 and 74 had nearly as high of a probability of buying a new car as do Boomers.

By 2020, 30% of American will be 55 years or older, 40 million licensed drivers will be 65 years or older. Source: NIOSH [2016].

Boomers and Older Drivers Don’t Hear Well

hearing-41429_960_720Half of the nearly 76 million Boomers in the US are experiencing some degree of hearing loss, according to The EAR Foundation. Nearly 25 percent of those aged 65 to 74 and 50 percent of those who are 75 and older have disabling hearing loss. (NIDCD National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders).

Warnings are Annoying

According to IIHS many drivers turn off the warning sounds for lane departure warnings because of the annoying sound. SBD reported that almost 50%  disable one or more of their ADAS features and the average length of a car manual is 460 pages.

Seniors Driving = Longer Lives

Recent AAA Foundation research has found that seniors who give up driving are almost two times more likely to experience depression and nearly five times as likely to enter a long-term care facility.

Affordability

The Auto Buyer’s Affordability Index finds that a an affordable car is $18,535, which means with a median-income household can only afford 58.9 percent of the new-car average price. The SteerClear Wheel will not add to the price of a vehicle considerably because it uses  equipment already on the vehicle and does not require expensive components such as automotive grade displays.

Fingers Can Feel-Think

Research from Umeå University in Sweden shows that nerve endings in the fingertips perform neural computations that were thought to occur in the brain. Fingertips are among the most sensitive parts of the body. Fingertips are densely packed with thousands of nerve endings and able to interpret vibrations. In fact blind and visually impaired people can use vibrations from smartphone apps for navigation.
